The Mayan Civilization in Ambergris Caye

Ambergris Caye was once populated by the Maya Civilization, which is why nowadays you can find many Mayan sites scattered through the Island, such as Marco, San Carlos and Gonzalez. It is believed that the first Mayan setters that occupied Ambergris Caye totaled 10,000 and inhabited almost every part of the island. Initially they set up fishing villages but as their settlements progressed they converted their settlements into trading centers.

Among their greatest achievements was that they managed to devise a fantastic trade route throughout Central America from Mexico to as far off as Roatan Island, Honduras.

Belize

Upon one evening of summer breeze
I started to sail for Belize

Inspired by commercials on a T.V. screen
and advertisements of blue, on a magazine

Crystal clear water, refelecting rays
ships in the distance, creating waves

Sandy white beaches, all around

coconuts dropping to the ground

Fruits are abundant and the rum is sweet
with mild blue water at my feet

I can't imagine a prettier place
where footprints are always, by others replaced

The ads in the mags on ocean blue
and T.V. commercials were completely true

So upon that evening of summer breeze
I started to sail, for Belize.
