The Flora of Shipstern Nature Reserve



The Flora of Shipstern Nature Reserve is unique to Belize. It is the only region of the country with a dry and wet seasons also alternately dry forest typical of the Yucatan Peninsula. More than ten types of vegetation are distinguishable on the reservation, with more than a dozen species of trees identified to this day. The very unique Dry Coastal Forest Kuka-Palm Belize found located in Shipstern. This rare type of vegetation of the Yucatan Peninsula, found only in three. Coastal areas between Cancun (Mexico) and Belize, is rapidly disappearing because of development of tourism throughout the peninsula.

Several species of trees found refuge in the reserve, but logging, both legal and illegal, has reduced the abundance of these dramatically with search of species such as mahogany and cedar throughout the country. An exhaustive botanical trail was first brewed in 1990, including one hundred species of trees identified to date.
